Rome, Italy

A Week in the Eternal City

November 3-10, 2012

Sat / Sat - 8 Days

Rome wasn’t built in a day and it takes much more than that to really see the city today. Ambassadair’s trip is the best way to experience all that the “Eternal City” has to offer at your own pace! Rome sprawls over seven hills along the Tiber River and fascinates for both its ancient and modern wonders. You’ll have two half-day guided tours, but the rest of the time is yours to spend as you prefer – exploring ancient Roman marvels, medieval sites and basilicas or just walking around the narrow streets. You may also wish to take a day trip to Naples and Pompeii or to the Island of Capri.

Rome is a city of layers – the ages are layered, one atop another, with the ruins of pagan temples that have become the foundations of Christian churches, the ancient Roman theaters that have been converted to medieval family fortresses – but Rome is also a lively, contemporary world-class city with modern charms. Shopping is world class here, with leather goods, designer clothes, home accessories and antiques topping the list. And there are now shopping outlets in Rome for bargain hunters, too!

Experience Vatican City with a guided tour that includes St. Peter’s Basilica, the most important basilica of the Christian world. Although the main structure itself was designed and built in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, the location has been a sacred place since Peter and Paul founded the church in the 1st century. The site became a major pilgrimage destination through the ages. Then, as today, it holds much of the treasures of the Catholic Church, including the famous Navicella mosaic by Giotto and the frescoes by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel.

A buffet breakfast at the hotel is included in Rome, but you’ll have lunch and dinner to plan your own memorable meals. Wander the ancient streets while munching on a slice of pizzeria al taglio (carry-out pizza), sipping cappuccino at a sidewalk cafe or having a gourmet picnic prepared for you by a local deli. Dinner Italian-style is a must while in Rome – pasta, seafood and beef have never tasted so good!

Itinerary Hotel

Sat, Nov 3: Depart Indianapolis for your overnight flight to Rome, Italy.

Sun, Nov 4: Arrive in Rome, meet your motorcoach driver and English-speaking assistant and transfer to the NH Leonardo da Vinci, your home for the next six nights, located near Vatican City. Rest of the day is on your own.

Mon, Nov 5: After a hot and cold breakfast buffet at the hotel, meet your driver and guide for a half-day sightseeing tour of Ancient Rome. Stops include the Colosseum, the largest building of its era where gladiators fought before crowds of cheering citizens, and the ruins of the Roman Forum, once the political and religious epicenter of the Western world. Rest of the day is at leisure to explore more of the city. (B)

Tue, Nov 6: Breakfast at the hotel with the day to see more of Rome on your own. This might be a great time to visit museums such as the Galleria Borghese, the Capitoline Museums or the National Gallery of Modern Art. You may wish to take a daytrip to Naples and Pompeii or possibly the Island of Capri. (B)

Wed, Nov 7: In the morning, visit Vatican City and St. Peter’s Basilica. As the spiritual center of the Catholic Church, St. Peter’s is the ultimate destination for Catholic pilgrims but also draws visitors to its masterpieces of art and architecture. Tour the Vatican Museums, nearly two dozen galleries and period rooms with many great works of art that were collected by the Catholic Church. View the Sistine Chapel with its magnificent restored frescoes by Michaelangelo. The rest of the day is at your leisure – perhaps a tour of the early Christian catacombs (cemeteries) below the city? (B)

Thu, Nov 8 – Fri, Nov 9: Visit more of Rome, with time to shop, see museums, churches and ancient monuments or just walk around, experiencing the city. Consider climbing Palatine Hill, once the site of aristocratic residences and private palaces, or to the top of the grand Spanish Steps to admire a panoramic view of the city. Views of Rome from the Pincio Gardens at sunset are especially dramatic; survey the beautifully illuminated Forum at night from the Campidoglio (Capitoline Hill). Don’t miss throwing a coin over your shoulder into the Trevi Fountain to assure your return to the city. (B)

Sat, Nov 10: After breakfast, check out of the hotel and meet your motorcoach driver for the transfer to the airport. Return to Indianapolis the same day. (B)
