Oberammergau Passion Play in 2010
European Event of a Decade! |

July 11-18, 2010 |

Sun / Sun - 8 days |
|
It was during the Thirty Years War that the deadly and contagious contagious disease known as the Black Plague broke out in Europe. The plague ran rampant throughout Europe, killing one out of every three people. Located high in the Bavarian Alps, the citizens of Oberammergau attempted to shut themselves off from the outside world. When a young man affected by the plague snuck into the village, 84 residents died with him in three weeks. In an act of desperation, the town council proclaimed that if their citizens were spared, they would put on a play depicting the life and suffering of Jesus Christ.
True to their word, the first Passion Play took place in 1634 over the graves of the Black Death victims with all of the roles played by local villagers. This tradition still holds strong today with more than 2,000 local citizens making up the cast of actors, singers, instrumentalists and stage technicians that bring the six-hour play to life. Their commitment begins years in advance as they start growing their beards and sewing their own costumes.
The year 2010 marks the 41st time the story will be presented in Oberammergau. The play is in a closed theater with an open-air stage and the mountains as the backdrop. The play comprises spoken dramatic text, musical and choral accompaniment. This historical and unique performance is considered a great honor for all who have the privilege to experience it.
